Kat Sanders’ career has been greatly affected by her past. A severe stammer was overcome by years of speech therapy and study of classical music/opera. Music fixed the speech impediment. So well, in fact, that she became Network Broadcast Manager for a Portland NBA team and was the voice for many of the team’s radio voiceovers, and produced several commercials. Later in her career became drive-time radio news anchorwoman and even news producer for an NBC affiliate. Her speech malady was far behind her, but the underlying medical cause of the affliction was not.

Unknown to Kat, a medical time bomb nested in her brain. A birth defect, that usually strikes those in their late teens or early twenties, lay in wait. The brain taught itself to work around the speech problem, but could fix neither malady nor the associated migraines.

On Earthday 2010 the Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in Kat’s brain burst. It was the equivalent of seven aneurisms bleeding at once. Her brain was one third full of blood and her brain stem moved nearly a half inch. She was given less than a ten percent chance of surviving and a trillion to one chance of being fully functional. She actually flatlined on the way to the hospital and was given CPR, then was finally revived upon arrival.

This resulted in a near death experience (NDE) that Kat has come to describe as her “gift”. She saw and felt things she never thought possible. She came away from the experience feeling better about both life and death. She got a glimpse of what was to come, a taste of the afterlife. She had a wonderful conversation with her late father, whom she has been able to connect with often since that experience. She believes she was given more time to help those grieving – to explain the beauty of the afterlife and help others connect with their lost loved ones.

Kat since co-authored and published a workbook, “Unstoppable Life”, which helps readers discover for themselves what is important, to THEM, in their lives. She has given many motivational seminars, based on the book. She is working on a second and third book, due to hit the shelves in the near future, about her close brush with the afterlife and what it all means. She appeared on the hit Arts and Entertainment BIO channel television series “I Survived Beyond and Back”.

Some aftereffects of the brain trauma remain. Kat has occasional bouts of vertigo (she calls them her personal earthquakes) and her depth perception is poor. But, she now sings professionally, something she was too afraid to do before brain surgery.

She, like many she has counseled, is learning to accept the good with the bad. Living as well as one can, dispensing and receiving as much love as possible, is the best way to prepare for the end of this short life on Earth.

OC IANDS exists for people in the Orange County and surrounding area who have had a near-death and/or related experiences or who have personal or professional interest in such experiences. The group provides a forum in which to discuss such experiences and their meaning and integration into subsequent life.

Discussion takes place in an atmosphere of openness and interest/support without judgment, proselytizing, or advice-giving. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in Irvine.  We have a structured program with a guest speaker followed by discussion.

IANDS is not affiliated with any specific religion.

Those who attend and who can afford to do so are asked to make a $10 contribution toward our cost for rental of our meeting room.
